Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) - Bareroot Available November to March - 40 - 60cm

One of our tough native trees that makes a superb windbreak and a grand estate tree but is supreme as a hedge. Hornbeam hedges can be clipped or pleached or pollarded with spectacular results. It is similar to beech in that it retains it's foliage through the winter, so that although it is deciduous the effect is of a fully clothed hedge all year round.
Planting Hornbeam
Will grow in most soils, including chalk.
As a specimen tree, ensure that the planting hole is wide enough to spread out the roots without bending.
Mulch around the sapling, leaving a good couple of inches to allow for good air circulation, to exclude competing grass and weeds.
For a hedge plant at the rate of 3 per metre.

Please see our planting guide in 'Tips'.
