Very dense small-leaved native evergreen, with dark green glossy, leathery leaves which give off an unusual sweet smell. Small tufty yellow flowers appear from late winter. Slow growing but will, if left unclipped, form a large shrub, it is also shade tolerant. Box has traditionally been used for topiary and formal hedging work. One of our few native evergreens.
Planting Common Box
Will grow in most soils, including chalk.
Plant at a rate of five plants per metre.
To help your box hedge get away to a good start incorporate Dingle Nursery Compost which contains a slow release feed.
Mulch around the sapling leaving a good couple of inches around the stem to ensure good air circulation.
