Betula pubescens (European White Birch) - 40 - 60cm

Rather more upright growth than silver birch but with distinctive white bark and downy young shoots. A deciduous tree of medium height that will grow even in damp or poorly-drained soils. A good windbreak too, as it will accept exposed, windy sites.

Planting European White Birch
Will grow in most soils, including chalk.
Ensure that the planting hole is wide enough to spread out the roots without bending.
Mulch around the sapling leaving a good couple of inches around the stem to ensure good air circulation.
