Our native alder and a lover of damp places besides streams and ponds. This fast growing deciduous tree, like all alders, is a nitrogen fixer in that it adds fertility to poor soils. Its dark green leaves have a nicely contrasting grey-white underside and its yellow catkins produce tiny, cone-like fruits in autumn. It’s a good screening tree and is often used where rabbits are a problem as they dislike the bark of alder.
Planting Common Alder
Will grow in most soils including poor, badly drained or wet ground.
Ensure that the planting hole is wide enough to spread out the roots without bending.
Mulch around the sapling leaving a good couple of inches around the stem to ensure good air circulation.
